Hi! A lot's been happening! And I wrote some stuff! Have a buncha links!!!

My Werewolf Pride series over at [personal profile] glitter_n_gore is . . . gonna go over Pride Month, actually, but screw it these things never work out how I expect them to. Here's the one on Lupin, and here's the one on Ethan Chandler from Penny Dreadful.

At the library, I wrote a thing about Wonder Woman and another thing about American Gods.

I also wrote a thing for the paper about Neil Gaiman's Norse Mythology, which I'm NOT linking elseweb because it's got a huge picture of my damn FACE. I'm cool with you guys seeing it, but what the hell. I dunno who took over their web master duties, but guest reviewer photos go on the BOTTOM. And are very small. The header should be an image of the actual book. Like, nobody knows who I am, that image is going to draw in zero readers. Also I dunno why some editors somehow make the grammar and spelling WORSE but I assure any mistakes you see in this article aren't mine this time. Pfft. /rant

Other things I did not write include: WAYWARD SISTERS!!! THAT LADY-CENTERED SUPERNATURAL SPINOFF THE FANDOM HAS BEEN BEGGING FOR!!!! IT IS HAPPENING!!!!!!!! Here is one of many "OMG FLAIL FLAIL FLAIL (pleasedontfuckitup)" speculation/wishlist think pieces out there so I don't have to write one myself.

But I do have a few provisos to add to it. Putting these under a cut so they don't take up too much space....

Rhoda's Personal Wayward Sisters Wishlist )

MOVING ON:

Sense8, while still cancelled, is not ending on a cliffhanger as folks feared when the cancellation was announced. Lana Wachowski released this open letter describing a two-hour wrap up finale/followup type thing that will satisfy viewers' curiosity and give them some closure. It's not quite like bringing back the show altogether, but it's better than nothing. More importantly, this, along with the Wayward Sisters spinoff, proves that fans can get shit done. Network heads don't entirely ignore us and that's important to remember. I....just wish I actually *liked* Sense8 so I could share in this victory with you. I'm very happy for fans of the series that this is happening, but I uh, still haven't watched Season 2. (There are reasons for this, but seeing as this is a Happy Joy Yay Good Things time for the fandom, I'm not going to talk about them today.) I will say that announcing the cancellation of the most unapologetically queer show on Netflix at the beginning of Pride Month was a shit thing to do, so I'm glad they "fixed" it (sort of) while we're still in June. It's a small favor, but still.

ETA After taking y'all's advice: WOW WYNONNA EARP IS SO GOOD YOU GUYS!!! You just saved me so many hours of frustration and disappointment. THANK YOU!!! *HUGS ALL AROUND*

Inner Fangirl: Hey! Hey, Rhoda!

Oh god, what is it now?

Inner Fangirl: I noticed once you’re done with Hannibal you’ll be caught up on most of the things on your List until the Fall.

Why do I feel scared?

Inner Fangirl: I have an idea.

Oh please no.

Inner Fangirl: We should watch Sherlock.

No. No, we shouldn’t.

Inner Fangirl: C’mon, it’ll be fun! There’re only 6 episodes per season!

Yeah but they’re like 2 hours each.

Inner Fangirl: You’re a binge-watcher, you can do it!

But I’ve heard things. The casually misogynistic dialogue. The queerbaiting.

Inner Fangirl: We can write SO MANY BLOGS!

The awkward accidental nudity. You KNOW we hate accidental awkward nudity.

Inner Fangirl: We can reuse our Game of Thrones T&A counter!

Why do we even have that, it’s a terrible idea.

Inner Fangirl: But we have to complete the SuperWhoLock trifecta!

NO WE DON’T.

Inner Fangirl: It’s set in London! Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch in TAILORED SUITS!

STOP IT.

Inner Fangirl: There’s even one set in Victorian Times!!!! With the pipe and the floppy hat and everything!!!!!!!

GODDAMNIT WHY.

(I can stop blogging about Supernatural ANY TIME I WANT.)

SO.

Now I know what it feels like to experience a Supernatural finale in real time. And holy shit, this was a doozy.

Garments were rent, tables were flipped, tears were shed. And then the fandom broke Twitter. I’m not even being hyperbolic, because this time I WAS THERE.

Spoiler-ish, but not going into detail. Tread carefully.

Let's talk about expectation. )

Of course I'm still punning. Don't judge me.

Sometime last week, I dunno quite when, I realized that we had a couple more Buck-Leming episodes in the can before the S12 finale. On top of that, I realized we have another "fan favorite" character who was introduced by Robbie Thompson, and who was brought back on for a couple more episodes. Cue me going, "Oh fuck, Eileen's gonna die, isn't she?" Not JUST me, mind you. And I'd much rather have my increasing cynicism subverted and thrown in my face than have it validated. Seriously, this is not the kind of Told You So I enjoy.

SPOILERS if you need to know that, but know also: I’m done here. Fuck this show.

I should just catch up on Sense8 instead. )

Unpopular opinion time: I do not like Neil Gaiman’s American Gods. Finally watching the Starz adaptation that began airing this week confirmed all my previous feelings about it: while the ideas and imagery are arresting and will get your mind spinning in a good way, the delivery and characterizations left me cold. Also Shadow Moon is a very passive protagonist, the kind of character things happen to, rather than the kind who takes charge of his own storyline. I will say that Ricky Whittle does a fantastic job bringing pathos and empathy to very little meat in the way of action or dialogue, and I already like him better onscreen than I did on the page. It’s an original story with a black lead character and a substantial amount of media buzz. We should be glad it exists. Also I can’t WAIT to see Orlando Jones as Mr. Nancy, who is my favorite character in the book and so awesome he got his own spin-off novel, Anansi Boys. So at the same time I’m fascinated by it and want to watch / read it again? I dunno, it’s weird, and it’ll probably always feel that way to me.

Why even bring this up? Well, the central conflict in American Gods is one that stuck with me, regardless of how distancing I find the source material: the idea that gods need belief and regular worship to exist. The old gods of ancient civilizations are dying out because people either don’t believe in them anymore, or don’t even know about them anymore. The gods of old need believers much more than the general populace needs them, and the general populace needs to see themselves in their icons if they're going to invest any spiritual energy into them.

As you can probably tell, I’m revisiting that “evolution of hero worship” post I hinted at here. But I’m not here to talk about American Gods. Not yet. Instead I’m talking about the Thor movies again, Norse mythology in general, and Loki in particular.

This recap/rant is brought to you by my upcoming recap of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azakaban, subtitled “Werewolves Are People Too;” my previous rant/recap of SPN Episode 2.17, “Heart”; and the larger repercussions of writer Robbie Thompson’s palpable absence from Season 12.

SO. I'm caught up, more or less, and while Season 12 has been quite enjoyable for the most part (I love Mary, and I REALLY love Mr. Ketch, if you aren't following me on Twitter), some aspects of the way this show is going are bothering me.

Let's talk about that.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a television series in possession of good ratings must be in want of a queer ship.

Somewhat less universally acknowledged is the fact that queer shippers are the most hated sub-category of any given fandom. Even *less* well known is the fact that, according to the Ao3 census from a few years back, the creators and consumers of fanfic and fanart revolving around slash are overwhelmingly queer women. I’ve been in fandom for over twenty years. These criteria do not change. Ever.

Hi!

I’m officially caught up on Supernatural, and I’ve spent the past few days wandering through the “Dean Winchester Is Totally Bisexual” corners of Tumblr and YouTube. Quick by-the-by for the new kids in the room: I came to the same conclusion around the midpoint of my binge-watching journey, but held off on reading other meta supporting this theory. And since diving into the rabbit hole OH MAN. There is SO MUCH MORE that I didn’t even notice.

Four Part Gif Set showing
1: A woman’s legs framing shot of Dean looking on and ogling.
2: Same as 1, with Sam coming into the shot to steer him away.
3: Dean smiling sheepishly at a male police officer, who smiles sheepishly back.
4: Same as 3, with Sam coming into the shot to steer him away.

That sound you’re hearing is my head asploding with the implications of the subtext that’s been there THE WHOLE TIME. This is what y’all do between seasons, isn’t it? Go back through every single episode digging for nuggets of queerness? I’m so there. Also, I learned a new word: Polysemy. Read this discussion. It is utterly fascinating, quite brilliant, and an excellent example of what I love best about fandom.

Aaaaaanyway, shall we talk about what happened last week? Because it was kind of a big deal. But first I need to back up a smidge: I need to talk about Chuck Shurley.

I decided I was gonna make a list of cult horror references in Supernatural when I got caught up, and that time has arrived. If I went into every single horror reference I noticed over the seasons--not to mention the many cult movie icons who keep showing up as secondary characters (OMG it's Ginger! And Freddy! AND ALESSA!!!)--I'd never get off this one post. So I pared it down to my favorites, and tried to keep it in the realm of the slightly more obscure stuff that the average1 Supernatural fan might not have noticed.

1Keeping in mind that "average" is a misnomer at best. What I mean is people for whom this is the closest to horror they like to get, which includes the girl who got me into it in the first place. (Hi Gothie! *waves*)

Hey, remember last recap when I was talking about how I don’t see the Dean/Castiel thing as “queerbaiting” and this show is one of the things I’m clinging to so as not to focus on how much the world sucks right now?

Yeah.

i.e. the other thing that keeps me from losing it altogether. This is what I've been *trying* to post about for weeks, and all the shitty news keeps making it feel like it doesn't matter and why do I bother? I recap because this means something to me. It's a lifeline that I desperately need right now.

I have written, scrapped, and rewritten this one post more times than I care to count. And I find myself dancing around the subject or going off on tangents rather than addressing it directly like I want to. The main point I’m circling over and over is this: critics of Supernatural, specifically other LGBT+ fans who are bloggers or professional reviewers, have called it out for this thing called “queerbaiting,” pointing to several instances in specific episodes as evidence. The problem is I am looking at those same instances, in those same episodes, and feeling like someone’s given my actual, lived experience as a queer person a voice and a platform for the first time in my entire life.

The theme of Season 9 so far seems to be variations on the following:

DEAN: But we’re faaaaaamily!

SAM: You keep using that word. I don’t think it means what you think it means.

Rhoda's Theory: How you react to the final confrontation scene in “The Purge” is entirely dependent on which one of them you think is actually in the right.

I’ve been following Mark Watches recaps of all the episodes for a while, partly because it keeps me from getting lost, and partly because of the fandom commentary in the comment section I would otherwise miss. There seem to be only two possible interpretations here. Rather, I’ve only observed two interpretations in my limited interactions with the greater fandom, so do correct me if I’m wrong, but first let me extrapolate a bit.

I haven’t talked much about Dean in these recaps. Let’s do this.

A couple basics first:

1) I’m hardly the first Supernatural fan to pick up on Dean’s probable bisexuality. I’m not even the first bisexual female slash shipper to pick up on this. But I am interested in exploring this on my own before digging into the other meta.

2) I’m starting not from a “One could interpret things this way if they so choose” perspective, but more “Holy shit, this is blindingly obvious, you’d have to wear heavy-duty straight-blinders NOT to see it.” I am playing my Death of the Author card somewhat, but . . . keep this in mind.

3) There are people who refer to this sort of thing as “queerbaiting.” I am not one of those people. Let me tell you why.

Me: Um, waiter? There seems to be a Lifetime Original Movie in my Monster Show.

Waiter: Ah yes--that’s the Amelia Special. A bland, unoriginal montage of soft-focused flashbacks served on a bed of pure apathy and irrelevance.

Me: Yeah, I didn’t order this.

Waiter: You don’t have to! The Amelia Special comes as a side-order to your main course. No extra charge.

Me: . . . Why?

Waiter: Well our new head chef thought our customers might appreciate something easily digestible to go with our usual fare of extra-rich, heavy melodrama.

Me: Why would anyone think that? Why do you think we come here?

Waiter: I can take it away and bring you something else if you like.

Me: How about french fries? I always liked the french fries here.

Waiter: You mean the Ruby Special? Sorry, we didn’t bring those back after Season 4. Can I bring you another side?

Me: Do you have another Designated Love Interest Special?

Waiter: Oh no, it’s just the Amelia Special. We just turn the plate 20 degrees counterclockwise and pretend it has different ingredients this time.

Me: Whatever, forget it--I’ll work around it. What else do you have?

Waiter: Well we’re mid-season now, so can I interest you in a stir fry of blatant racist stereo--

Me: No.

Waiter: Okay. We have a Continuity Casserole. It’s a bit burnt on top, but with a sharp enough meta analysis you should be able to get through to the seasonal plot line.

Me: Eh, not in the mood. Maybe next time. Let’s skip to dessert.

Waiter: Well we still have the All-American, your basic apples-and-hypermasculinity comfort food. And then there’s Angel Food--always a favorite, but it does run out rather quickly, and I can’t predict when we’ll have more. It just sort of disappears and shows up again pretty much at random.

Me: No worries, it’s been doing that for years. What else?

Waiter: We do have Subtext Strudel this year. We’ve been testing it out over the past couple seasons really, but I do think the recipe’s improving. Some people find it bittersweet, but it really depends on your palate. I recommend ordering it with the Rainbow Sherbet.

Me: Okay, yes. Bring me that. In fact, bring me two. What do I owe you?

Waiter: Just a little more of the time you should be spending working on your novel.

Me: . . . Crap.

OKAY ENOUGH. This is a wall-to-wall squee post. Because I want one. Apologies to anyone who follows me on Twitter and has heard/seen some of this stuff before. Not going terribly in-depth here. But yeah--squee post. I need it.

Let's Talk Season 7!

Exploding black goo. They had WAY too much fun with this one.

This is where the show became slightly less awesome. Meaning, the Big Bad is interesting in several ways, but just not terribly compelling? There’s some acidic social commentary that I really appreciate--like warning against the dangers of complacency, how letting one dude control all the things is a terrible idea, the risk involved in doing the right thing when the odds are stacked against you, how impossible it is to take care of yourself mentally and physically without a support system--all good stuff. Just got real tired of the Leviathans real quick. Look, I’m all for monsters that are organized, intelligent, and damn near impossible to kill. It’s just an entire season of said monster and I’m relating to the Winchesters’ exhaustion in dealing with this crap a little too well.

That said! There was some pure, undiluted fabulousness happening in Season 7, and I’m gonna squee about it.

Yeah, I need a moment. The marathon will continue after I gather the pieces of my heart up off the floor. This is going to be somewhat more disorganized than usual. Bear with me.

Current mood: Overwhelmed by Feels.

Here’s something I just realized: somewhere between deciding to actually watch this properly, then getting hooked to the point of wanting to continue watching more episodes because it’s a lot smarter and more self-aware than I expected, and getting gut-punched by Season 2 in general, and by Episode 17, “Heart,” in particular (it’s about werewolves)--I have become a FAN of Supernatural. Because you know, I was kind of holding it at arm’s length before, mostly because of all the Problematic Issues people have warned me about. However, I was intrigued because so many of my favorite people seem to love it despite its issues, so I wanted to know what was so goddamn special about it.

ETA: This entry is now public, temporarily, because something's gone wrong with my layout and I need the tech folks to look at it and help it work out what the crap happened.

Yep, my internet's still a touch wonky. Restarting helps, but I don't want to do that every day if I can avoid it. Hm. Maybe the universe is telling me to get offline a bit more? I dunno.

Also, my iPod is throwing one of its semi-monthly hissy fits by not playing when I hit "play." It's a Shuffle, and not that fancy, so I don't know if it's just old or what, but I really don't want to buy a new one. I need my running mix, man!

sorcery

Stupid machines. . .

SO! If you haven't heard about this ALS Ice Bucket Challenge business, my library has done it--not comfortable posting videos of Real Life people who aren't me, but trust me, it was hilarious. Here's the deal: in order to raise awareness, you A) make a donation and tell people about it, 2) dump a bucket of ice water on yourself WHILE FILMING, and "nominate" three others to take the challenge, 3) both. Some celebrities have gotten in on it too, including Matt Damon, George Takei, and Matt Smith. The thing is going viral on a Real Life and Fandom level for me, which is all kinds of awesome.

Speaking of awesome: At the library yesterday, this poor girl was trying oh-so-discreetly to ask me if we had any albums for One Direction and another boy band I've already forgotten the name of. (5 Something? I dunno--we didn't have it, still waiting on an order I think.) But she was all shy and worried about her "reputation" going down because of listening to this music instead of . . . whatever the kids think is ~Cool these days, I don't know. And I had the pleasure of saying, "Listen: I have five Backstreet Boys CDs in my car right now. You have nothing to be ashamed of." Maybe it's a leap to hope she'll assume that I'm awesome and worth listening to, but librarians are generally better thought of than, say, teachers or parents, at least from what I remember. I also remember how much shit I put up with back in the 90s when I was in high school, and how little any of that matters now. As an aside, all the One Directioners I've encountered have been consistently groovy and sweet. I'll probably never be a fan, but they must be doing something right, because their fans are such good kids.

Speaking of fandom: Yes, I've seen the Series 8 premiere of Doctor Who, and yes, I have a Thing to say about it. When I finish organizing my thoughts. I'll just leave you with this: What if my dream had come true and they HAD cast Emma Watson as Twelve? Just let your imagination run with that a bit. You're welcome! ^_^

Rhoda Rant-Snow

I've had a revelation.

So, you know how I like to whine about how much I loathe love stories in general, and Romance (TM) in particular? Well, I don't think it's the genre. Or even my orientation, which I admit makes it damn near impossible to relate to the whole Love At First Sight thing (or the more common Lust At First Sight thing) that most pairings in romantic stories are built on. Or even the deliberately formulaic setup that most of the stories are forced to comform to, given the rigid structure and explicit rules laid out in genre romance. (Seriously, the rules and expecations in genre romance are amazingly stringent--I take my hat off to anyone who can write a compelling story while abiding by them.)

It's not any of those things. Not really. It's the fact that, no matter how many romances I pick up, the heroes are invariably not what I'm looking for in my unrealistic, idealized fantasy man and therefore I can't be arsed to care about the Happily Ever After. If you can't fall in love with the hero in a romance, you're not gonna get on board with the love story. What I've never been able to do (until now) is put my finger on what sort of hero I'm actually interested in. I just didn't put much effort into seeking out love stories after being disappointed, annoyed, bored, or just plain insulted by them over and over. Leading off that, I assumed the sort of character I could get really excited about and want a love story from just didn't exist.

I was wrong. Technically this character is not a romantic hero, because the universe he inhabits is a grimdark epic fantasy. But he does exist. His name is Jon Snow.
