I finally saw it! This weekend! And that was kind of perfect because it was my mom’s birthday, and this is her very favorite Disney movie. One of the first questions I had when I found out this adaptation was happening was: Will it be a musical? The answer is a resounding YES, and I cannot express how gleefully happy this made me.

However, because the 1991 animated feature is one of my favorite movie musicals of all time, I have a slightly different set of criteria when it comes to reviewing it. Usually my priorities fall this way:

  1. Characters.

  2. Setting / atmosphere.

  3. Plot.

In a musical though? Everything falls somewhere after one question: Can they sing?

Logged back in long enough to delete my old accounts, because fuck this "agree to this weird Russian shit" nonsense. Goodbye, LJ. Thanks for introducing me to some awesome people, and letting us relocate here. Seriously, fuck LJ right now.

ETA: Cleo is top of things, and here's a long-ass, detailed, and horrifying breakdown of what's going on with the new User Agreement: https://cleolinda.tumblr.com/post/159203569084/confusedkayt-minimoonstar-handful-ofdust

In other news, I've been listening to Silverchair's Neon Ballroom album a lot the past couple weeks. It's kind of awesome and slightly terrifying in retrospect now.

That song came out in 1999. I was sixteen and only just starting to wake up politically enough to pay attention to the clusterfuck that was the Bush vs Gore election of 2000, although I wasn't old enough to vote yet. Within the year, we lost the Twin Towers in New York.

Now, almost twenty years later, it feels weirdly prescient even though there's no way Daniel Johns could've had any idea about exactly the kind of political climate we'd be entering after the aforementioned clusterfuck. (I was a huge fan, I read ALL the interviews, and while he is still very politically active esp. in terms of feminism and animal rights, this song was written mostly for the gang vocals.)

And can we just agree that Silverchair is one of the most severely underrated bands of the 90s, if not all time? I keep forgetting how many great songs are on this one album, and how good they sound live, and how tough it is for me to pick a favorite. Although the videos are laughably easy to search nowadays. I first saw ^that^ video on a VHS tape that I borrowed from a friend in high school. The only alternative was waiting for your parents to get off the phone so you could use the internet, waiting for the dial-up to actually connect you (three tries usually at my house), and then finding a streaming website that would actually load a music video for you. It took fucking HOURS. Finding that clip up there took seconds.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this. I've been going through some of my 90s fandoms just to see how many of them have actually stuck with me twenty years on. When I got to this one, it knocked the wind out of me a little.

In conclusion: Get off LJ, listen to Silverchair, appreciate your wicked-fast Internet while it lasts.
